Save the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station!

Posted on September 10, 2012

The Conservative Government made major cuts to the Canadian Coast Guard in their 2012 omnibus budget bill. These hidden cuts, which were not properly debated, will result in the closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard station in 2013.  As a result of the closure, experts estimate that emergency response times in Vancouver Harbour will increase by up to 50 minutes. This will put our lives and our communities at risk.

Joyce Murray, the Liberal Member of Parliament for Vancouver Quadra, stated, “Experts all agree that the closure of Maritime Search and Rescue coordination centres in St. John’s, Quebec City, and Kitsilano will likely lead to a preventable loss of life from marine accidents. The Kitsilano base in particular serves the busiest port in the country. These cuts will leave fewer rescuers to cover more ground when responding to emergencies”.

That is why the Federal Liberal Association in Vancouver Quadra has dedicated itself to collecting 2,000 signatures to help Joyce Murray and Dr. Hedy Fry, our Liberal Members of Parliament in Vancouver, ensure that the Conservative government reverses these foolish cuts in the upcoming session of parliament.

On September 2 two dedicated volunteers began collecting signatures on Jericho Beach. In less than two hours they managed to collect over 100 signatures from concerned citizens.
As they were collecting signatures they noticed that everyone’s gaze would shift towards the hundreds of shipping vessels and the smaller boats that dotted the harbour. Vancouver Harbour is one of the busiest waterways in Canada, reporting over 350 incidents per year.
Although experts and citizens understand these cuts will affect the lives and safety of Canadians from across the Lower Mainland, Stephen Harper and his Conservative government have cut all funding to this base without any local consultation.

“I think a lot of us who use the ocean – and I am one of them – want to know no lives will be imperilled as a result of this budget balancing exercise.”
-Christy Clark, Premier of British Columbia

The Vancouver Parks Board and the Vancouver City Council have both passed motions opposing the closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard.

The City of North Vancouver City Council has unanimously passed a resolution asking the Feds to reverse course on the cuts.

In light of the negligence of the Conservative government, we are determined to collect 500 signatures this week, and over 2,000 signatures before Oct. 9.  Come help local Liberals save the Kitsilano Search and Rescue Base.

We will be canvassing the beach every Sunday  for the next month click here for more information on the September 16th outing or to RSVP.
